About i3
Institutional Insights & Innovation (i3) is a small, agile digital enablement group embedded within academic and research context at UConn. The team currently supports dozens of active projects spanning student success, research advancement, fee-based program support, and operational efficiency initiatives. i3 partners directly with faculty, administrators, and university leadership to design and build institutionally owned applications that solve real problems and evolve with changing needs.
Position Summary
i3 is seeking a motivated Web Application Developer to join a fast-paced, collaborative team building custom web applications for a wide range of university initiatives. This role is ideal for a developer who enjoys working across projects, communicating with stakeholders, and using modern tools (including AI-assisted development workflows) to deliver practical, high-impact solutions.
The successful candidate will contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of Laravel-based applications while working closely with team members and campus partners to iteratively deliver features and improvements.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain web applications using Laravel and related technologies
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into working software
- Contribute to multiple concurrent projects supporting academic, research, and operational initiatives
- Participate in architectural and technical decision-making within a small team environment
- Use Git for version control and collaborative development
- Leverage AI-assisted tools to accelerate development and problem-solving
- Troubleshoot, debug, and enhance existing applications
- Support deployment, testing, and documentation efforts as needed
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced environment where developers help shape solutions, not just implement specifications
- Strong problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to work through ambiguous requirements
- Interest in understanding user needs and translating them into practical software solutions
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and collaborate with non-technical stakeholders
- Self-directed, motivated approach to learning new tools and technologies
- Approximately 3-5 years of professional web application development experience
- Experience developing applications in PHP (Laravel strongly preferred)
- Experience working with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQLite)
- Experience using Git and collaborative version control workflows
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Laravel or willingness to learn quickly
- Experience working in agile or small-team environments
- Familiarity with Bootstrap or similar UI frameworks
- Experience using AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT) in development workflows
- Interest in higher education, research, or mission-driven technology work

Appointment Terms
Work will be performed in a hybrid work arrangement, for 40 hours per week. The appointment is for 6 months and subject to renewal based on need and performance. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2026.
